ToMAYto/ToMAWto

It started when I made several calls with a tech support department regarding an issue I had with some hardware.  It’s a fairly complex issue and these phone calls have been spanned over a few weeks.  The wait times are always long and I make these calls in hopes that more progress will be made and any miscommunications can be corrected.

One thing I noticed is these people are more likely to misinterpret what I am saying.  It started off with “You’re breaking up.  Can you repeat that?”  I thought nothing of it and simply spoke at a more steady rate.

Another time, the person on the phone misheard my name.  I used phonetic alphabets to spell my name: “A as in Alpha, N as in November, T as in Tango…”  They replied, “Well, you were definitely in the army”, which is not true by the way.

When I called them again, the other person also had a hard time hearing me and blurted out “I don’t understand you; it might be a cultural thing.”  Again, this was an issue spelling my name.  I remember saying “S U A R E Zed”.  They replied, “What’s E-Zed?”  I paused for a moment and said “S U A R E Zee”.  Yes, the letter Z is pronounced in 2 different ways depending on the region.

I don’t know for certain where this department is and I assume it is somewhere in USA.

Out of all of the phone calls I have made in my life, I don’t think I’ve had a single department had a hard time understanding me multiple times with different people.  Don’t get me wrong; I was born and raised in Canada and English my first and only language.  Even when I speak to departments outsourced to other countries (e.g. India, England, China, etc.), I may have a hard time hearing them and I’ve never struggled like the people above have with me.

Everyone has accents, slang phrases, expressions, etc.  We all speak differently.  I was just surprised with the phone calls I’ve been making to this place.  Since we’re on the subject of speech, King of the Hill is a popular cartoon where the characters speak with different accents from other cartoons; to others, it may sound common to others and it stands out to me because I live in Canada.  Despite this, I still understand what they’re saying.

I’ve never thought of the way we speak so much until now.  I don’t know if it’s something I should keep in mind whenever I call someone who may be outside of Canada.  I’m not holding a grudge towards anyone.

Hopefully, these technical issues will be resolved soon and I’ll find a way through this communication barrier.  Wish me luck!

Do we really hate teens that much?

I was reading an article in T.O.night magazine on the train and I came across an interesting article.  It was about a high school teacher who was fired for expressing her anger towards teenagers through her blog and Facebook account.  Many people have supported her feelings.  Essentially, she complains that teenagers are too “careless”, “bored” and “whiny” amongst other things.

I am currently 23 years old.  I remember my teenage life and I have learned much from it.  While I never loved school, I managed to get through it despite the mistakes I have made.  There seems to be more hatred towards teenagers now.  While rules and laws need to be enforced, I think it’s important to draw the line between punctuality, respect and oppression.

I went to a school with a strict uniform code.  They wanted to simplify the uniform so that everyone is forced to wear the same school sweater, regardless of the weather.  I know that trespassing is a common issue; for example, a teen from another school may enter a building wearing a dress pants and shirt of a similar design to the uniform.  I eventually learned to live with the uniform code as I moved closer to graduation.

If I wanted to express my frustrations towards teachers, I could.  However, I know they’re just doing their jobs.  I am well aware of some of the pressure they have against them.  No matter what happened, I’m just glad that I got through it and it’s all in the past now.

In a matter of speaking, teachers and students have similar complaints towards each other:

Teachers can be lazy too

I have had many teachers who sit at their desks and say something such as  “Read Chapter 5 and complete all questions at the end.  Hand in your work by the end of this class”.  Unfortunately, this is a fundamental task that I had to get used to in my life.  Even to this day, I still refer to books and other references for the sake of getting work done; both for personal and work-related tasks.  I learned from this is that I can’t expect everything to be taught to me in a visually stunning manner.  However, I feel that going through this in college/university is far more frustrating considering the cost of tuition.

There will always be teacher labor disputes

When I was in college, there was a strike in my first year.  While there many motives behind the strike, there was one thing that we all knew teachers needed more of:  Money!  The cost of living is rising and it is generally believed that teachers are not getting paid enough.  I remember having a part-time teacher who complained that he works so many hours that it feels like he’s full-time.  There were many part-time teachers working many hours to save money from paying full-time teachers.  Some people may enjoy time off from strikes, however, the classes don’t become any shorter and time is taken away from vacation or study break time.

Teachers may not be teaching their favorite subjects

I remember a college said to the class, “Sometimes we teach classes that are unrelated to our skills.”  For example, I had a History teacher who also taught English, Religion and Economics.  I highly doubt this person applied to the teaching position thinking, “I’ve always wanted to teach 4 completely different subjects”.

Conclusion

There have been good and bad times; there have been times I was glad to be in class and when I was bored out of my skull.  Without the intent of bragging, I’d like to state that I did graduate high school and college with honors.  I did a lot of work and it was important to have friends to study with.  I’m not perfect and there are blotches in my report cards despite my greater averages towards graduation.  I know that there are teens who behave repulsively.  It just bothers me that people seem to be expressing anger towards all teenagers.  As we get older, we become aware that we’re sitting through boring classes simply it is a requirement; maybe we don’t like a teacher and we know that we have to carry on and accept them for who they are.  In the end, school is about education, being punctual, making connections and finding out what we want to do in life.

The Corny Factor 3: Why I Don’t Like Romantic Comedies

Shucks! by my1000words

"Shucks!" by my1000words

I have never really liked romantic comedy.  I may watch them occasionally with friends and family and yet it has always been a genre that I generally despised.  It’s always the usual character falling in love with another and through shenanigans, slapstick and setting their differences aside, they share their love together and get married at the end.

It is a genre that be created with a low-budget, geared towards family friendly audiences and receive a high return at the box office.  It is obvious why these movies are being made year after year.

This edition of The Corny Factor isn’t geared towards any individuals or films in particular; if this genre is making profit, I can’t argue with that.  Everyone needs to pay the bills and have food on the table.  If someone paid me millions of dollars to star in a corny cash-in romantic comedy, I’d jump on that wagon too.

What do we really want in a relationship?

There are many types of relationships out there and not all of them are necessarily serious or involve a lifetime commitment.  I’m not a parent or psychologist.  When I think back to my past, I remember being told not to take my life too seriously and whenever I get into a romantic relationship, I should be clear and honest about what I expect from it.  I’m not the marrying type and there are many people who feel the same way.

What I’m getting at is that sometimes romantic comedy can give the impression that we need to go out of our way to find this one “true love” and that’s the only thing that matters.  I’m not Dr. Love and I’m not offering advice.  People want different things in a relationship and may not necessarily reflect what is shown on TV and film.

Marriage is not a requirement!

I’ve been to a few marriage ceremonies and parties.  Although I admit I do get bored at ceremonies, I do like parties.  It’s nice to be in a classy place with good food, music and be able to meet both sides of the family.  I think it’s the baroque visuals that catch people’s attention that make marriages appealing to people who watch these movies.

It is generally believed that 50% of marriages end in divorce.  Everybody doesn’t have to get married.  Marriage isn’t a magic ritual that will genetic alter me and my girlfriend’s DNA to guarantee 100% compatibility.  George Clooney has only been married once and is well-known for refusing to go through another marriage.  People can live happy lives without having to be married.

I’m aware of people getting married to change their citizenship status and that is a very complicated topic that I don’t want to discuss any further.

Just because the characters get married, does not mean their lives are happy forever.

I stop caring about the plot.

With all the clichés, I find myself ignoring character dialog and hoping that something violent or mature will happen.  Sometimes, I have talk over a movie to annoy people at home.  I’m not expecting a plot twist or significant character development.  I know they’ll get together at the end, fall in love and get married.  I highly doubt they can kill off characters, not get married, include excessive profanity and still call that a romantic comedy.  That would be expected in other genres of course.

When I watch romantic comedies, I can’t enjoy the plot or climax of these movies.  With other genres, I find them easier to enjoy and the plot feels more important to me.

Hot girls! What else is new?

I remember talking about why I hate certain romantic comedies and people will say that it starred a girl who is “really hot and I love to do certain things with her” or “so hot that it’s the only reason why I am watching this and I love the way she dressed”. Well, there is a certain genre dedicated to sensuality.  Don’t get me wrong.  Is that really the reason why many romantic comedies make over $100 million?  Most of these key scenes can be seen on YouTube.

In addition, some of these scenes with sensuous women can be the reason why a romantic comedy would have a PG-13 or R rating.

It’s always too long!

With movies I don’t like, I find myself pressing the display button to find out how much time is left and at times I’ll even fast forward through if someone’s not paying attention. Half of the time it passes the 90-minute mark and can be as long as 2 hours, 30 minutes. It’s easy to summarize these movies with the way it’s written and edited. A large portion of these movies is padding and I feel like I’m being tortured sometimes.  People can criticize a movie for being too long just as much as they can for being too short.  Some of these movies even include unrated/extended versions in addition to the deleted scenes and other extra content included on the discs.

Conclusion

I respect the fact that this genre is highly profitable and attracts a wide audience. Romantic comedy is one of my least favorite genres and there have been many times when I wish that I was watching something else. I have nothing against people involved in making these movies or anyone who enjoys them. With the desire to have a constant stream of high income, people will follow trends and invest in anything with a low investment and a high return. It is a way of life. It’s a genre that doesn’t appeal to me and I am clearly not within the target demographic.

I Want Everyone To See This – Top 10 Worst Movie Cliches

YouTube Preview Image

I agree with James’ video so much.  He does an excellent job at pointing out these cliches and showing examples from movies to back up his points.  I’ve been hating so many movies lately that I feel like it’s a requirement to do some research before even seeing a certain movie.

Enjoy!

Strange Null Object Errors

I noticed that if I view this blog with Internet Explorer, there are several error messages with the HTML about null objects. I’ve been aware of this issue for a while and did so much research.

First of all, I don’t like IE very much and I only use it when I’m at work. I’ve been using Firefox for the longest time; before the name change, I was still using Mozilla whenever I was using a Linux OS.

In any case, just ignore the errors for now and when Internet Explorer replaces IE 8, the error won’t matter anymore.

A Strange and Fascinating Dream

I woke up this morning on Boxing Day and I must say that I had one of the most fascinating dreams I have ever had.  It was video game related and it was full of action, but it was strange.

I dreamt about playing a video game!  I felt like I’ve played it before.  I remember I was a playing a GameCube game but the experience was so unreal that I forgot everything and I was so immersed into this game.  It was like I was literally inside of the game.  But here is the part that is messed up:  The character in the game in my dream was a girl, a very beautiful one.  It felt like Grant Theft Auto with the violence, action, realism and being in a large city crowded with people.  She was trying to save someone who she cared about but I don’t know who.  She had a rocket launcher, pistols and she drove like the world’s greatest stunt driver.  Her fighting style is like Angela Jolie’s character in Salt; she could beat anyone up and every weapon would be at her disposal.  It was crazy.  She blew up cars, shot tons of people wearing ballistic vests and nobody could catch her.  Like I said, it felt like Grand Theft Auto.

I remember popping the disc out of the GameCube and putting it back into its CD case.  The cover was black with the words “Face to Face” in big letters.  I of course, don’t have any games called that and I couldn’t find anything like that.

Dreams happen so fast!  That’s all I remember to be honest.  The rest is just feelings that are hard to describe.  This literally felt like one of the most advanced games ever with the latest tech, animations, big budget and made by the best game developers in the world who made it with love and pride.  There were explosions and just a lot of stuff going on.  She wasn’t some criminal or trying to become a mob boss; she was trying to rescue someone and she would go to great lengths to save this person.

Have you had any crazy dreams lately?

Reflecting on Pharrell’s Quote

Like I’ve said before, I am a huge fan of The Neptunes, N.E.R.D., Star Trak and just about anything associated with Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo.  Many fans would agree Pharrell gets more camera time than anyone else from Star Trak.  There is a popular quote that I have heard him say a few times during interviews:

“Wealth is of the heart and mind, not the pocket.”
- Pharrell Williams

At first, I easily agreed with this.  Money is great to have but without things such as happiness, creativity and goals, we’ll never love the life we live.  As I reflected more on his statement, I felt like it is something ironic for him to say; he is a very rich and successful person.

I would consider myself a successful person yet nowhere near Pharrell.  My musical skill is horrible; I’m still poking around with Beaterator on the PSP and my guitar abilities are still on the beginner.  I consistently get my bills paid and whenever I have free time, watch a new movie, play a new game or work on a secret project about something I’d like to pursue in a future career.  What I’m trying to say is that at the moment, money is something I use to pay bills, buy food and just about anything else; there is very little I can do without having to spend some cash.  With that said, I’m not really independent from money; I’ve managed my life well enough so that I usually have something else for myself.

I know a friend of mine who has some of Pharrell’s BBC Ice Cream clothes.  They are fairly expensive and a pair shoes, shirt, sweater or pants can start at $250.  These clothes are a boutique line, so a limited amount of each design is made and each article of clothing is identified with a unique number on the tag (e.g. “47 of 500″).  I read somewhere that someone who doesn’t care about money would buy this to show their support of Pharrell and the brand.  However, I still have not purchased any boutique clothing to this day although someday I would like to.  It’s probably one of my new years resolutions: Update my fashion sense.

With regards to the quote, money is just a man-made resource for fueling the economy to me.  I believe that we do need money and I can be just as happy with $100,000 as I could be with $1 million  The only thing that would change is my spending habits; being happy, growing, achieving goals and doing things that I enjoy would still be my responsibility no matter how much wealth I have.  Also, once the money is gone, I’d lose everything, so if I had $10 million, I’d still have to manage my spending; I could probably live off the interest somehow.

In summary, while I like Pharrell’s statement, I still need money despite my creativity and imagination.  People usually say “money can’t buy happiness” and I think that’s easier to relate to.  I think the point is to still enjoy life and not end up like the many people who become rich and die from drug overdoses or other things that stem form depression.

EDIT: Fixed some typos.

What’s The High Speed Scene up to?

YouTube Preview Image

To be honest, I can’t remember for the life of me exactly how I discovered this band.  They are a three member rock band that uses catchy melodies that I like.

I was either in my final year of high school or I just started college.  I am a huge fan of The Neptunes, Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo; their funky beats, unique sound and large coverage of genres have always captivated my attention.  As a result, I’ll listen to just about anything from their label, Star Trak Entertainment.

Naturally, I wanted to find out what other artists Star Trak had.  After some web searching, I discovered The High Speed Scene and it surprised me; this wasn’t hip-hop, R&B, soul or techno; it was rock music and it is very catchy.

YouTube Preview Image

They only released one album, which is self-titled.  I’ve recently been listening to it on Rdio.  It’s a great album.  However, the album is short at ~32 minutes; the longest track is Last Chance at 3:34.

I tried to find out what they’ve been up to lately and ended up with nothing.  Their site, thehighspeedscene.com seems to have been turned into a Japanese store by domain squatters; The last login on their MySpace page was on January 2010.  I can’t find any videos of live performances on YouTube.  In addition to that, they are not listed in Star Trak’s website.

There’s a chance that they could have disbanded, moved to another label.  As I was writing this post, I discovered that Max Hart and Adam Aaronson of HSS joined another band We Are Scientists during their live tours from 2007-2009; form what I’ve seen, their live performances are awesome and the addition of the HSS members during live performances really pack a punch.  They are a good band and I’ll definitely make sure to listen to more of their music when I have the chance.

Hopefully, I’ve impressed some readers with this quick article and some music.  They’re really great and I hope the HSS legacy lives on.  I wasn’t expecting to discover We Are Scientists and they are a good addition to my list of music I should listen to when I get the time.  With regards to Star Trak, I still love their music and artists in their label.  I’ve been listening to Chester French for a while and their album Love the Future is good.  However, I hate that siren sound at the end of Sleep; however, it does reflect the feeling of waking up abruptly after sleeping for a short time.

I was browsing the web randomly like I usually do and I decided to search for Pharrel Williams and N*E*R*D. I can’t believe I forgot they have a blog.  Pretty much anything with Pharrell/N*E*R*D is my favorite.  In an interview, they said that their next album will have a nature theme; curious.

Good show guys!

The Corny Factor 2: Trace Amounts

Hybrid Corn

Hybrid Corn No.1 by GoBuggyGo

I was watching some movies with my brother.  We watched Superman/Shazam!: The Return of Black Adam.  I told him that I didn’t like it because it’s only half an hour long and it follows the straight pattern of “child is weak” – “child gets picked on” – “child gets power” – “child fights evil and is strong again”.  Don’t get me wrong, Superman is awesome and overall, the animation was awesome.  I love superheroes; I think they’re awesome.  In summary, I really don’t know anything about Captain Marvel other than the fact that he’s a kid that gets magical powers whenever he says “Shazam”; I could go on with my life calling him “Magic Superman” and nobody would say anything.  If I really wanted to learn about Captain Marvel, I should read the comics; it’s just that this movie doesn’t explain much for anyone who knows nothing about Captain Marvel.  Despite my personal opinion, my brother loved it and thought it was awesome.

Deep down inside, I realize that I am not the target audience for these type of movies.  PG-13 movies sell more than any other genre; it is between the PG and R rating.  I also believe that people rarely go to a movie theater to watch it alone; in this case, they’d rent or buy it online.

Non-Violent Superheroes on TV

Corn by Sasakei

Corn by Sasakei

It’s obvious that parents don’t want their children to watch anything that could shock them or have a negative effect on their upbringing; I don’t need kids to know that.  For example, take a look at Batman: The Brave and the Bold on TV.

It’s just that I remember watching Spawn on TV when I was in high school.  The first time I watched it, I was shocked by the violence, profanity, shadows, dark themes and its overall aggressive tone.  It was canceled after 18 episodes; I assumed that HBO wanted to replace its late-night slot with a higher-rated show.  I watched some episodes recently and hear the usual comments whenever anyone watches a show like this:

  • “Eeeeekk!  That’s horrible”
  • “Why do you like these shows?”
  • “That’s really twisted”
  • “Can we watch something else?”

I think Todd McFarlane is a genius!  He does plan on resurrecting the TV series and it is currently in “development hell”.  I wish him luck and I really want to watch it uncensored; I hope it has the same strong writing and style the original had.

Whenever I watch any superhero movies, I watch it knowing it will have some corniness:

  • Nobody dies; they just disappear or go to another dimension.
  • Everyone’s power consists of martial arts, super strength, fire, lasers and speed.
  • Money is EVIL!

I don’t feel that I’m being hateful or too harsh; I just know that I’m not the target audience.  I think we’ve become so used to the family-friendly superhero image that we don’t question it anymore.  I’ve also seen Batman: Under the Red Hood and I still like it.

I think another issue I have is that I stopped reading comic books!  I remember I used to stop by the comic book store at a mall and spend $5 on a single comic book, going home and reading it.  It’s really making me thinking about getting into that again.

Sweet Corn Landscape by Bookgrl

Sweet Corn Landscape by Bookgrl

In summary, I feel like I hate more movies than I like.  I remember telling my brother that I hate District 9 because “it’s made for people who don’t understand science fiction”.  I’m aware that it has themes of discrimination; it’s just a movie I didn’t like very much for different reasons.

I’m still a fan of Marvel and DC despite their ways of toning down the content for TV and film to reach a wider audience.  I think the 2 Iron Man movies have great special effects.  I feel that too much time is spent on showing that Tony Stark is a socially awkward; for an Iron Man movie, I personally don’t care about Tony Stark’s human side.  Did you know that Iron Man was originally supposed to take place during the Cold War?  It’s just whenever I watch anything, I can’t resist nitpicking and seeing the corny bits to make it appeal to more people without using mature themes.  We’ve learned to accept it and it’s not something people question.  Whenever I do, people look at me funny and it’s usually something I keep to myself.
